Hagåtña, Guam – Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Governor Josh Tenorio issued the following statements on the passing of Guam architect and visionary Andrew “Andy” Laguana:
“We join the island of Guam in mourning the passing of Guam architect and visionary Andrew Laguana, a gifted and hardworking artist whose service helped design our island’s future,” said Governor Leon Guerrero. “His contributions laid an inspired foundation for many modern symbols of our CHamoru identity including the Guam Museum, a standing monument of Guam’s beauty and history. His life’s work and loving memory is forever etched in stone and will be celebrated by the people of Guam for generations to come. Jeff, Josh and I send our sincere thoughts and condolences to his family, friends and all who loved him.”
“I had the privilege of serving with him on the Guam Preservation Trust and the Guam Historic Preservation Review Board, where he led restoration efforts for many of Guam’s historic structures. He was a visionary and always believed in the talent of our people,” said Lt. Governor Tenorio. “Because of our familial ties, he counted on my dad as a mentor. When my dad died, he in turn, mentored me. I send my love to his wife Joann, their daughters Jerusa and Drew Ann, and their families, and to his siblings and extended family.”
Laguana was the first architect from Guam to chair a region of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and also served on the University of Guam Board of Regents.
