The last devastating Typhoon to hit Guam was Typhoon Mawar in 2023. Prior to Mawar, Guam hadn’t been hit by a severely damaging typhoon in many years. Although typhoons have been part of life in the region since time immemorial, there is concern that climate change will bring more frequent and more dangerous typhoons in the future.

In November 1962, the strongest typhoon in Guam’s recorded history, Typhoon Karen struck Guam, with sustained winds of up to 185 miles per hour. 95% of homes on the island were destroyed and 11 people lost their lives.

This image show some of the devastating impacts of Typhoon Karen, where boats were hurled more than 600 feet from their mooring in Hagåtña Boat Basin into store fronts along Marine Drive.
