These images showcase a hotnon sanhiyong or hotnon Españot, a Spanish style beehive oven and also the Guma’Yu’os Sumai or chapel in the village.
These images are known as stereographs and consist of two nearly identical images that are placed on top of each other to create the illusion of a three-dimensional image. Stereographs were commonly mounted on cards such as this and viewed through a device called a stereoscope.
In the Hinanao-ta Exhibit of the Guam Museum, you can find several stereographs on display. These particular images of Sumai are from the stereograph collection of the Library of Congress, which amounts to more than 52,000 total images, and includes a handful from Guam in the early 20th century.
