The image and dozens of others were recently donated to the Guam Museum by Mr. John Crandall. The photos were taken by his great-uncle, Dr. Rand Percy Crandall, who was stationed on Guam for 18 months during the early years of the US Naval period in 1902-1903.

During his time on Guam, Dr. Crandall tended to the medical needs of Filipino revolutionaries that had been exiled to Guam by the United States and was part of the opening of a Naval hospital that also treated local civilians. He also experienced several devastating earthquakes while stationed on Guam, one of which destroyed the original US Naval hospital, built in 1899.
