Alupat Island, Guam 1969

According to legend, this island was formed at the conclusion of a great battle between two Maga’låhi (male chiefs) from different villages. Their names also provide the story for how the surrounding area, Alupang gets its name.

 

Alu was a maga’låhi from Tamuning and Pang was a maga’låhi from a southern village on Guam. During the battle, their power was so great that each time they struck each other, the trees around them were knocked flat from the force.

 

Although both were wounded and bloodied, Alu eventually gained the upper hand and Pang attempted to flee. He swam out towards the reef. Alu responded by taking a huge boulder and hurling it after him. The rock crushed his opponent and sits there off the beach up until today.
